| Test: Is Your Teen a High Risk? | Given risk estimation will help parents to determine their teens’ level of risk and what parents can do to help their children.
Risk Estimation Give the answer “Yes” or “No” for the following questions:
- Do you worry about your teen safety because of his or her behavior? - Does your teen have any troubles at school? They may concern truancy, suspension, grades, etc. - Do you notice the signs of the lack of your teen’s self-esteem? - Is your teen using drugs or alcohol? - Does your son or daughter display violent behavior? - Has your child had problems with the law? - Have you had such thoughts that your son or daughter may not finish high school? - Does your teen seem depressed? - Does your teen have trouble with authority? - Do you think your teen lies or is dishonest with you? - Do you worry about your son’s or daughter’s future? - Has your teen ever displayed signs of suicidal ideas? - Despite rules and consequences, do you think your child will defy them? - Are you exhausted from your teen’s defiant behavior? - Do you feel helpless when dealing with your teen?
Now count your “Yes” answers to the above questions. Estimate your teen’s level of risk and think over the following interventions.
10 “yes” answers: Your teen is a high risk, get help immediately. A residential center, treatment program, or specialty school will help you and your teen.
5-9 “yes” answers: Make some changes at home by strengthening rules and structure. You may seek for outside help, such as a residential help, treatment program, or specialty school.
Up to 4 “yes” answers: Your child is a moderate risk. Improve your family rules, as well as your family communication.
