Healthy eating for teenagers means just the same as healthy eating for adult people: having three meals a day with snacks in – between them; eating foods from various food groups, eating when hungry and stopping when full, etc. eating well helps young people to maintain enough energy for school, sports and all other kinds of activities, as well as to reach their full height potential.

Here come some healthy eating tips for teens, which should be taken into consideration while being at school, at home or elsewhere.

1. Start your day off right. Do not forget to eat breakfast. Remember, it is the most important meal, and having a good breakfast will only help to start the day right. Generally breakfast can consist of a piece of toast with peanut butter and either unsweetened cereal with milk or a steamed bun with lean meat / vegetables. In addition, it would be good to liven up the cereal with some fruit, such as sliced banana or diced apple, just because there is a proverb: an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

2. Do not skip meals. It is extremely important to have three meals a day in a regular basis. Moreover there are to be snack in between, which would encourage healthy energy levels and weight. Teenagers should try not to snack on unhealthy food, when they are not hungry. And in case of eating away from home, it would be very useful to bring some healthy snacks and drinks.

3. Apply healthy food preparation. To healthy ways of food cooking grilling, stir – frying and boiling may be referred. In addition, fresh or dried herbs and spices should better be used to flavor food, rather than adding any less healthy toppings, such as gravy, margarine or butter. Before cooking for a more nutritious meat, skin and fat should be trimmed off.

4. Eat a variety of foods. It is necessary to point out, that human body requires more than 40 nutrients for good health maintenance. And there is no food or food group, which can provide a person with all these nutrients. This is why it is necessary to eat a variety of food from different food groups in order to make sure that the organism is getting what it needs.

5. Avoid too much sugar. It has been proved, that sugar containing drinks are only the source of empty energy, nothing more. They contain a lot of energy, which is in the form of calories, and which teens do not need at all; and as for vitamins, protein and minerals, there are nothing of them in these drinks. It would be very useful to try sugar – free sodas or flavored waters instead of regular soda or juice. In addition, there is much sugar, found in such desserts as cakes, candies and cookies. Therefore, it does not mean at all that teenagers are to avoid eating these products, they should simply enjoy them in moderation.
