4. Tattoos and Body Piercings There are considerations, that if a teenager is going to get a tattoo or body piercing, it is the warning sign of him or her being on the brink of some trouble. In case if someone’s daughter is thinking about making body art, it is necessary for the parents to make sure that she is aware of all the potential risks, such as infections, scar tissue and draining wounds for piercings, allergic reactions or such diseases as AIDS and hepatitis from instruments, applied for tattooing. It is also possible that the trendy temporary henna tattoos would result in several months of pain and feeling of discomfort, and a lifelong allergy to some chemicals, found in the dyes. As for the tongue piercing, it can result in swelling, which would close the airway off, choking risks from loose jewelry, bleeding, which may get out of control and even nerve damage. It is also possible that teeth may become chipped and / or cracked. And in case if after all warnings, the teenager decides to have the tattoo or body piercing done, the parents’ task is to make sure that the procedure is performed with all the equipment being sterile and by a professional, who has the certificate, and who works in a clean shop, which looks much like a medical facility.
5. Adolescent Girls and the Sun It is very important to make the teenager aware about the necessity of skin protection from direct sun rays. In hot sunny days it would be useful to slather on at least a couple of tablespoons of sunscreen at least once in every two – three hours. Girls should be encouraged to cover their head with a wide – brimmed hat and sunglasses, which are equipped with ultraviolet light protection. In addition, it should be noted, that girls, who are prone to freckles or have eyes or hair of light color, get sun burnt more easily than dark headed and dark eyed ones. This is why such girls should be urged to try to keep sun exposure at a minimum and have a health professional examine their skin in a regular way. Between these visits to the doctor, these girls should examine their own skin for signs of any mole, which has changed in size and / or shape.
