Residential Program Characteristics
teen_residential_treatmentResidential treatment programs for teenagers with psychological problems such as depression and substance abuse issues with drugs or alcohol help teens to recover in a safe environment while continuing their studying.

Residential Treatment Centers for troubled teens are similar to Boarding Schools, except they include personal and group therapy. As a rule, teenagers live at the center about 6-18 months. Most Residential Centers provide a full academic program so teens can continue their education while at the center. They also have therapist on staff and don’t usually need to contract outside services to perform personal and group therapy.

Residential Treatment Centers are long term, usually 6-18 months. They are most appropriate for teenagers that need long term help. Teens that have been abusing drugs or alcohol, getting into a lot of troubles at school, or have other emotional or behavioral problems are included. Teens with suicidal thoughts or severe depression would benefit from a residential Treatment Program.

Residential treatment may not be appropriate for teenagers that have only moderate problems. Some teens need only a “quick fix” treatment, that’s why such long-term centers are not appropriate for them. A teen that is getting into mild trouble at school or has just begun to display his or her aggression may not need a Residential Treatment Center.

The residential treatment programs are long term and include therapy. That’s why teens have enough time to make lasting changes. In their turn, therapists have enough time to understand the real causes of the emotional and behavioral problems the trouble teen may have.

Teen Treatment Centers are more expensive than Boarding Schools because they include therapy. The costs range from $4,000 to $11,000 a month. Some expenses for the therapy may be paid by health insurance.

Residential treatment centers vary in what they offer. Many treatment centers help youth and adults with some kind of a psychiatric problem or substance abuse issue. They are divided into 4 categories:

- Residential Treatment Programs
They help with suicidal, psychiatric, and substance abuse problem.

- Residential Drug Treatment Centers
They provide specific help for substance abuse dependency or addiction.

- Residential Treatment for Troubled Teens
It is a combination of the two categories above coupled with a structured daily schedule.

- Therapeutic Boarding Schools
These are residential placements for teens in need of counseling and therapy.
